Hazing Prevention at Maryland
The University of Maryland embraces traditions that strengthen our community bonds while upholding core values of respect, safety and inclusion in all activities.

At the University of Maryland, we are committed to fostering a culture of care—one where every member of our community feels valued, empowered and supported. That starts with how we welcome one another.
Hazing has no place on our campus. Whether it's in student organizations, athletic teams, or fraternities and sororities, we are committed to building a culture where belonging is never built on harm.
This site is your resource for understanding what hazing is, how to recognize it and what to do if you or someone you know is experiencing it. Together, we can create a campus where tradition never comes at the cost of someone’s well-being.
Every Terp has a role in preventing hazing and promoting respect.

Hazing Policies, Resources & Prevention
Hazing refers to any activity expected of someone joining or participating in a group that humiliates, degrades, abuses or endangers them, regardless of a person's willingness to participate. Hazing practices can be found in various organizations, including fraternities, sororities, athletic teams, clubs and other student organizations.
Hazing is prohibited by both the state of Maryland and the University. Because of off-campus jurisdiction, it does not matter if the hazing occurred on campus or anywhere else. If a student is involved, the University will address the incident.
Reporting hazing helps protect your peers and upholds our collective values. By reporting, you contribute to a culture of respect and integrity, helping us ensure a safe academic environment and a welcoming and engaging social community where all students can thrive. Whether you're directly involved or a concerned observer, your report can initiate positive change.
The University of Maryland provides comprehensive resources to prevent hazing and support those affected by it. We offer [information about trainings and other resources]. Our educational initiatives aim to raise awareness about recognizing hazing behaviors and understanding their impacts on individuals and the community.

Because hazing continues to be a problem that cuts across the University and its various communities, the prevention of it must also be a communal effort. Students, faculty, and staff have already contributed to the information provided on this website and in other ways across campus. Special thanks goes to the Maryland Parents Association for their financial support by way of a grant toward programming that will raise awareness of hazing prevention at Maryland.
